Finnish soccer players Timo Stavitski and Tony Miettinen won the Swedish championship on Monday.

Mjällby, represented by Stavitski and Miettinen, defeated IFK Göteborg 2–0 in the decisive Allsvenskan match. Jacob Bergström scored Mjällby’s opening goal in the 21st minute, and Tom Pettersson added to the lead just seven minutes later.

Stavitski got to play in the opening, but Jeppe Kjær was substituted for him in the 62nd minute. Miettinen was not in the lineup for the decisive match.

The championship is Mjällby’s first in club history. The small-town club, which lost only once in the past season, secured its sensational victory three rounds before the end of the season.

According to the 2023 data, less than 1,400 inhabitants lived in the Mjällby agglomeration. The settlement belongs to the municipality of Sölvesborg, where there are only about 17,000 inhabitants.

To the field

The match was temporarily suspended in extra time because Mjällby fans were rushing onto the field.

The enthusiasm was somewhat understandable. Ten years ago, the team played in the first division and was close to bankruptcy.

– I didn’t think this would ever happen, goal scorer Jacob Bergström beamed to Max According to Aftonbladet.

Stavitski moved to Mjällbyhy last year from FC Inter. The 26-year-old Finn has scored one goal and provided three assists in 20 matches this season.

Miettinen left KuPS for the world last year. He visited the Norwegian club Odd, from where the journey continued to Sweden at the beginning of the year. Both of the two have represented Finland in the youth national teams.
