Enostone publishing company announced on Sunday that it will withdraw Harri István Mäken57, Kafka opens a barbecue kiosk – due to copyright infringement of the work.

Publisher Kalle Niinikangas told Iltalehti that they found out that Mäe’s work is a plagiarism of the late American poet-writer by Richard Brautigan of several poems.

– We have a writer who knows Brautigan’s works well, and he contacted us on Friday about it, Niinikangas said.

According to Niinikanka, the poet-writer contacted about the suspected plagiarism Timo Lappalainen. Now Lappalainen confirms the accuracy of the information to Iltalehte.

Lappalainen says that he borrowed Mäki’s latest work and noticed very soon that there was something very familiar in its text.

– I have Richard Brautigan’s books on my shelf and I started comparing them. After all, it started to be quite obvious that poems have been copied into it. Small variations may have been made, but it is a clear copy, Lappalainen says.

– This is a clear copyright crime. It’s a really outrageous thing, it really surprises me a lot. I’m a writer myself, so this takes a toll on someone doing it this way. Others try to do this job seriously, and one just falls short, he continues.

According to Lappalainen, he knew it was plagiarism because he noticed texts similar to Brautigan’s poems also in Mäki’s work published in the fall Pink punk. Helmivyö publishing house announced on Sunday, December 21 that Pink punk is withdrawn from the market due to plagiarism. The publishing house said that an “observant reader” noticed at the end of October that the work is plagiarized.

According to Lappalainen’s findings, Pinki Knalli was a clear copy of Brautigan’s novel Sombrero Fallout.

– That was also an incredible thing, Lappalainen states.

After noticing suspicious things, Mäen Kafka opens a barbecue kiosk – in Lappalainen decided to contact Niinikankas and tell about his observation. After investigating the matter, Enostone publishing decided to withdraw Mäki’s work from the market.

Lappalainen has not spoken to Mäki about the matter, and does not know him other than through Facebook. Lappalainen wonders if Mäki didn’t think he would be caught in his act.

– After all, this is such a famous author that he has plagiarized. Yes, one or the other would have caught the plagiarism over time.

Lappalainen does not take a position on what kind of consequences Mäe should face due to plagiarism. In Lappalainen’s opinion, publishers should at least stop publishing Mäki’s works.

– Because you can’t trust him anymore. You can’t tell how authentic the text he offers. But I can’t take any further stand, he concludes.

Niinikangas previously told Iltalehte that he could not yet say whether the publishing house plans to seek compensation from Mäe in connection with the matter.

– I have to research the copyright law a bit. But it may be quite difficult to get or apply for such compensation. I can’t say anything about it at the moment, since it hasn’t been uppermost in my mind right now, says the publisher.

– The main thing in my mind is to prevent the work from spreading more widely.

Iltalehti unsuccessfully tried to reach Mäke about the issue.
