Niinikangas explains to Iltalehte that Mäki’s book was found to be plagiarized. According to Niinikanka, the work is a plagiarism of the late American poet-writer by Richard Brautigan of several poems. Niinikangas says that the original poems had been modified for the work, but the original poems were recognizable.
– We have a writer who knows Brautigan’s works well, and he contacted us on Friday about it, Niinikangas says.
– So far we haven’t found out the origin of all the poems, but most of them, the publisher elaborates.
According to Niinikanka, he called Mäe about suspected plagiarism.
So did Mäki admit to the publisher that the work is plagiarized?
– In practice, this is the case, Niinikangas answers.
Niinikangas cannot yet say whether the publishing house intends to seek compensation from Mäe in connection with the matter.
– I have to research the copyright law a bit. But it may be quite difficult to get or apply for such compensation. I can’t say anything about it at the moment, since it hasn’t been uppermost in my mind right now, says the publisher.
– The main thing in my mind is to prevent the work from spreading more widely.
Iltalehti unsuccessfully tried to reach Mäke about the issue.
Mäki, who has also worked as a theater director, has previously written mostly novels for children and young adults. Mäki’s works in question include, among other things Insect hotel, Always cute mixed Detective agency Bibi and Kipi.
