The European equality delegation wants Spain to solve "sooner" the "issues" of the law of yes is yes

The European Parliament delegation that has come to Spain to learn about the evolution of equality policies regarding the law concludes its mission with a clear message: you want a solution “as soon as possible” for the problems derived from the law of only yes is yes, although he clarifies that it is not his role to solve them or press for the rule to be modified.

“I want to underline that the role of the European Parliament is not to solve, solve or put pressure on this law, We simply show hope derived from all the meetings that we have held that a good solution is achieved in Spain for their possible problems.“, explained the head of the mission, the Polish MEP of the People’s Party Elżbieta Łukacijewska.

“The European Parliament here cannot propose any type of provision that solves this problem because is the responsibility of the Spanish Parliament“, continued Łukacijewska.

The MEP spoke this Wednesday on behalf of the delegation, made up of parliamentarians from different political parties, and reported that she was very present during all the meetings Concern about the undesired effects in the review of sentences after the entry into force of the organic law of comprehensive guarantee of sexual freedom and that has sparked “a lot of interest” in the mission.

They have been the nine parliamentarians of the Equality Commission of the European Parliament who have participated in this mission, whose initial objective was to cKnow the advances in Spanish equality policies, specifically in relation to violence against women, care and dependency and the fight against trafficking. Specifically, among the members there were three representatives of the European People’s Party, two from the group of Socialists and Democrats, one from Renew (liberals, specifically a representative of Cs), one from Los Verdes, another from the Left Group (Podemos) and the last of the Conservatives (Vox).

Łukacijewska stressed that the European Parliament cannot provide legal solutions to member states, although she added that “it’s hard not to reflect” on the problem of the only yes is yes when it has been an issue present in practically all the meetings held.

The Polish MEP said that one of the conclusions about it is that “there is no good solution to modify it” and that the Supreme Court has informed them that in the near future “it is possible that due to the law thousands of people will see their sentences have been modified.

“The European Parliament very often cannot propose legal solutions, but we MEPs do bring up issues that seem very important to us. (…) The signal that we send to women from the European Parliament is that we know what is happening, we remember and support them“said the head of the mission.

Łukacijewska has asserted that Spain can solve “as soon as possible” the “possible gaps” in this legislation and has expressed confidence that the coalition government will reach a “consensus” on this matter despite the fact that the Ministers of Justice and Equality expressed “different points of view”.

Asked about whether the undesired effects of this rule obscure Spain’s progress in the fight against violence against women, the popular MEP replied that this country “has spared no effort in the fight against gender violence and against women” and that the path she has traveled “has helped many women.

However, he added that it is always the citizens who have to assess political decisions: “Any decision of politicians passes after the electorate”has reiterated.
