The European Parliament called for the inclusion of the European Union in Russia-NATO negotiation process about security architecture in Europe, writes Der Tagesspiegel. The publication clarifies that the proposal was made by the head of the European People’s Party faction, Manfred Weber.
Earlier, the United States had assured the European Union of “close cooperation” in the negotiation process. However, in fact, European colleagues do not take part in negotiations on the situation around Ukraine and security guarantees.
The head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, outraged by this state of affairs, said that Europe does not want to be a spectator behind which important decisions are made.
The telephone conversation between the Russian and American leaders took place on the night of December 31. The head of the White House threatened “large-scale sanctions” over the situation with Ukraine. The Russian leader responded by saying that it would be a big mistake: in this case, a complete rupture of relations between the countries could follow.
