BRUSSELS (dpa-AFX) – In the future, the EU and Japan will work more closely together on security issues, among other things. According to the Council of the European Union, an agreement agreed in 2018 to intensify the partnership came into force at the turn of the year. In particular, it is intended to intensify cooperation in the fight against terrorism and serious international crimes as well as against the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. Closer cooperation is also planned in areas such as space, energy, transport, education and research.
“This landmark agreement will guide future cooperation between the parties and ensure closer political and economic cooperation on a wide range of bilateral, regional and multilateral issues,” the EU said. From now on we will be in a better position to defend common values and principles. These included the rule of law, democracy, respect for human rights as well as open markets and free and fair trade./aha/DP/he
