The Düsseldorf Düsterboys pay homage to the music on “Ab und zu”.

Peter Rubel and Pedro Goncalves Crescenti combine their creative spirits for two bands: In addition to International Music, they also appear as Düsseldorf Düsterboys. While the musicians under the first alias tend to use electrically amplified instruments, their sister band uses softer folk sounds – as does their new single “Ab und zu”. With the release, they also announced their second studio album DUO DUO for October 7th.

The voices never sound softer

The pieces by Rubel & Crescenti are unmistakable, above all because of their well-tempered, polyphonic singing. Groups like the Comedian Harmonists were already aware of the effect of polyphonic arrangements towards the end of the 1920s – and thus laid the foundation for the era of doo-wop, without which some of the most beautiful Beatles songs would never have existed.

“Well, I love making music”

Back to the Ruhr area of the present time: As usual, the Düsseldorf Düsterboys assemble their text associatively from set pieces taken from everyday life – and thus pay homage to their raison d’Être, the music: “Well, I love making music / I listen / I meet the Edis and we play the blues / It’s so good / It’s the tram that bothers you / When you’re speaking for the radio / And everything’s very quiet / When you’re ready for the radio,” says the first verse.

Felix Aaron is responsible for the music video. With a pink background and an unexcited cut, he knows how to depict that gentleness that also characterizes the piece in musical terms.

Folk, decades heavy

The Düsseldorf Düsterboys released their debut NAME ME MUSIC in October 2019. At the time, ME reviewer Julia Lorenz said of her “decades-heavy” folk: “This music, which one should simply call music, has turned an extra loop through the past.” The Velvet Underground and the anti-folk of the early noughties. The full-length player will be released on October 7th via Staatsakt.

duo duo cover

The concerts of the Essen band are also recommended to our readers: On stage, Rubel & Crescenti not only show their sense of improvisation and humor – but also a different face every evening. Their tour, which begins in October, is consequently presented by Musikexpress.
