He argentine soccer will experience an unprecedented episode in the coming days: between on Thursday, March 5 and Sunday, March 8, 2026, All official competitions – from the First Division to the promotion categories – will be suspended. The measure was decided by the Executive Committee of the Argentine Football Association (AFA) as direct response to the judicial investigation that involves its highest leadershipespecially to president Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia and treasurer Pablo Toviggino.
The resolution was communicated after a meeting in which the clubs of the Professional Soccer League agreed to convene a stoppage of activities which coincides exactly with the dates on which Tapia and Toviggino must appear to testify before the Federal Justice for accusations that have put Argentine football at the center of an institutional storm. According to the complaint filed by the Customs Collection and Control Agency (ARCA) and partially admitted by Judge Diego Amarante, the AFA would have improperly withheld pension contributions and omitted the payment of taxes for an amount that exceeds $19.3 billion pesos between March 2024 and September 2025.

The decision to stop football was received with explicit support from numerous top-flight clubswho in public statements and statements denounced what they consider “judicial and political persecution” against the AFA leadership and demanded institutional respect. Some clubs, however, did not issue official statements. They did not respond to the measure nor did they explicitly support the AFA or its leaders on social networks or formal statements, generating a map of varied positions. Parallel reports indicated that certain institutions, mainly outside the national soccer elite, chose to remain silent or avoid taking sides in the conflict until they had more clarity about the legal and sporting implications. This includes large clubs such as Boca Juniors, River Plate, Racing Club, San Lorenzo or Independiente, which did not make their own statements rejecting the strike separately from what was decided in AFA.
