The compositions of Afra Mussawisade Jeroen van Vliet tingle and crackle ★★★☆☆

Keyboardist Jeroen van Vliet knows how to surprise every time with his versatile musical projects. His interests span acoustic jazz, fusion and oriental music and it is always his flowing playing full of elegant twists and finds that dominates.

In front of the album glow he teamed up with the more classically oriented Iranian percussionist Afra Mussawisade. The duo plays inventively and Mussawisade’s electronic accents work well. Nice how Van Vliet in Ride in Red suddenly switches from piano to synthesizer. The compositions tingle and crackle and don’t really need the arrival of a third musician, clarinetist Kinan Azmeh, in six songs. Van Vliet has worked with the Syrian musician before and their playing is also beautiful, but you often have the idea that the duo plays around Azmeh’s contributions instead of working as a trio.

glow is a beautiful record, and Azmeh enriches the adventurous sound of Mussawisade and Van Vliet with beautiful notes. But the most impressive here are the songs in duo line-up.
