NoWe would like to have news like this every day, in times of war like this. The 5-year-old boy who was rushed from Gaza to Italy to undergo a very delicate skull reconstruction operation with the removal of metal splinters is doing well.
From Gaza to San Gerardo in Monza
The 5-year-old boy, whose name is rightly not being disclosed to respect his privacy and his already difficult history, is one of the many victims of the ongoing war in Gaza. Last December he was seriously injured following an explosion, and suffered numerous metal splinters that had pierced his skull, putting his life at risk.
Given the situation, the doctors in Gaza were unable to operate on him adequately, so on February 9th it was decided to take him to Italy on a military flight from Egypt. The child was destined to IRCCS San Gerardo dei Tintori Foundation to receive treatment.
A delicate cranial reconstruction operation
The child from Gaza was taken care of byneurosurgical team of San Gerardo in Monza directed by Professor Carlo Giussani, who, thanks to a compact multidisciplinary approach, successfully completed the complex procedure cranial reconstruction with removal of metal splinters. Without this intervention, the little one would hardly have been able to survive.

Other specialists from San Gerardo were called to support the neurosurgery staff. L’Pediatric Craniofacial Malformation Surgery Unit directed by Doctor Fabio Mazzoleni and theMaxillofacial Surgery Unit directed by prof. Davide Sozziwith the assistance of the Pediatric Anesthesia team directed by Doctor Alessandra Moretto and by Professor Giuseppe Foti, as well as all the operating room staff.
A scientific and humanitarian success
«The little boy was the victim of an explosion trauma last December which he survived, suffering widespread skull injuries – explains Professor Giussani -. In agreement with the Ministry of Health and the Welfare Department of the Lombardy Region, the child was transferred from Cairo to our hospital to be taken care of by our specialists based on the pediatric neurosurgical and craniofacial expertise of San Gerardo in line with the pediatric mission of the new IRCCS”.
Convalescence and treatment towards a new future of Peace
Given the delicacy of the clinical picture and the complexity of the surgical procedure, the immediate post-operative course was carried out at the Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit directed by Professor Giuseppe Citerio. The child is continuing treatment and the currently favorable recovery path at the San Gerardo Pediatric Clinic, directed by Professor Andrea Biondi.
