The Chelyabinsk region denied the closure of the border with Kazakhstan – RBK

The day before, due to mass protests, several international airlines canceled flights to Kazakhstan and, in particular, to Almaty. Two flights were canceled by the Russian company Aeroflot. The Ural Airlines flight was canceled.

Flights to the country were also stopped by the Kuwaiti airline Jazeera Airways. Azerbaijan Airlines also stopped flights with Almaty, the company said on Telegram. Passengers of the Baku-Alma-Ata route will receive a refund or an opportunity to rebook free of charge.

Belarusian “Belavia” informed passengers of flights to or from Kazakhstan that they can change the date of departure without additional payment.

Protests in Kazakhstan began on January 2 due to a doubling of the price of liquefied gas. A government commission pledged to cut fuel costs, and President Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev dismissed the government. However, on the morning of January 5, protesters continued mass actions and began to storm the buildings of city administrations, including in Almaty, and participate in clashes with police and military.
