Rise in the incidence of COVID-19

In Russia as a whole, 38,850 COVID-19 infections have been detected over the past day, and the incidence is growing every day. In Moscow, a record increase in the number of cases since the beginning of the pandemic has been set today – 11,557 new cases. The previous record held since June last year.

  • Simultaneously with Moscow, St. Petersburg also reached a new maximum, where 4,753 people were infected with COVID over the last day, according to the operational headquarters, as well as Yakutia (761).
  • The rapid increase in the incidence in Moscow and Russia as a whole is associated with the spread of a new, more infectious strain of “omicron”. According to the Federal Operational Headquarters, in the country, Omicron infections still make up a minority of new cases – 43.8% (taking into account other strains) against 56.2% for Delta. However, according to Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, “omicron” already dominates the capital, almost completely replacing the “delta”.
