The boys at football, the girls at korfball: ‘That’s how it went in Brabant’

Korfball is a mixed sport for the vast majority of people. Slightly more than ten percent play women’s korfball, especially in Brabant and Limburg. This has to do with the Catholic Church that used to not want mixed sports. Women’s korfball club Rosolo in Reusel hopes to become national champion for the second year in a row on Sunday.

Eline Teurlings is the captain of Rosolo: “Women’s korfball is popular in the villages, in cities you mainly have mixed korfball. The boys used to play football and the girls korfball. Nowadays there is much more to choose from, but fortunately many girls still opt for it. women’s korfball, even if it’s less than before,” says Eline.

The national top in women’s korfball cannot be compared to mixed korfball. “We train twice a week, much less than the mixed top teams. But I sometimes want to put the ladies from mixed korfball against our team. There is certainly a difference in terms of level, but they will certainly not knock us off the mat. “

“We’re a big group of friends.”

There are reasons for the fact that Reusel has good women’s korfball players, according to Eline. “All players come from our own training. If the greatest talents break through every year, you are building something beautiful. We have many youth teams, so you have to fight for a place in the selection teams. Players from the first team train the youth. For example, there are now a few players in the first team that I have trained in. Not that we notice that in the field, because we are a big group of friends.

Eline is ‘only’ 24, but she says goodbye after this season. “When I was 17, I made my debut in the first team. Then there was a team where many players left and youngsters took over. We were just able to maintain ourselves, but in the years that followed we got stronger and stronger.”

“We will fight until the last minute.”

She quits because she thinks she can no longer go one hundred percent for the sport. “I travel abroad a lot for my work and a lot of time is spent in our new house in Bladel. Although stopping… They have already persuaded me to play lower korfball.”

What could be better than stopping with a national title on the field? The final is on Sunday in Schaijk against SPES/VIOS from Limburg. “We lost the final of the indoor season to Be Quick from Nuland in the last second, but we have drawn our conclusions. We did not play our own game. We did win the cup recently. If we take the double, that will make the loss in the hall final a bit more bearable. We will fight until the last minute.”
