2021 closed below the expectations of an auto sector seeking redemption from the harmful effects of the pandemic. There were 1,475,393 registrations of new cars (here instead the trend of used vehicles), a number far from the one million nine hundred thousand number plates of the pre-Covid period, the effect of an unfavorable situation determined by the reduced availability of electronic components that slows production and consequently also deliveries. Even with a year that is certainly not exciting, we can still outline which are the winners in terms of sales volumes by analyzing the ten best models divided by segment according to the calculations of Unrae.

SEGMENT A: FIAT PANDA, FIAT 500 AND SUZUKI IGNIS

Let’s start with segment A, that of city cars, a market segment that in 2021 saw its market share grow from 16.4 to 17.7%. In terms of volumes, registrations of the “small” were 260,738, the queen is always the Fiat Panda with 112,298 units, followed at a considerable distance by its sister Fiat 500, 44,819 units. In third place is the Suzuki Ignis with 14,679 registrations, a flattering result for the small Japanese, followed by the Toyota Aygo (13,714), Hyundai i10 (13,570), Kia Picanto (13,514), Volkswagen up! (10,773), Citroen C1 (8,520), Renault Twingo (7,999) and the electric Smart Fortwo (6,167).

SEGMENT B: LANCIA YPSILON, TOYOTA YARIS AND CITROEN C3

Segment B, that of compact cars, is now strategic for manufacturers as it is the one with the greatest specific weight in terms of volumes: 554,992 units last year, representing 37.6% of the national total. The best-selling compact in Italy was the Lancia Ypsilon with 43,735 registrations, followed by the Toyota Yaris (32,634) and the Citroen C3 (31,003). Followed by Dacia Sandero (29.094), Ford Puma (28.556), Renault Captur (28.225), Renault Clio (25.737), Peugeot 2008 (25.505), Opel Corsa (25.024) and Volkswagen T-Cross (24.009).

SEGMENT C: JEEP RENEGADE, FIAT 500X AND JEEP COMPASS

Another weight market segment is segment C, which includes compact midsize and – above all – SUVs and compact crossovers, which have now become the object of desire against classic sedans. A segment that in 2021 was worth 29.3% of the market with 433,016 registrations. On the top step of the podium is the Jeep Renegade with 35,334 units registered, followed by the Fiat 500X (31,982) and the Jeep Compass (28,570). Following Volkswagen T-Roc (28.341), Dacia Duster (27.077), Peugeot 3008 (20.878), Fiat Tipo (16.568), Volkswagen Golf (15.076), Hyundai Tucson (14.789) and Toyota C-HR (12.790).

SEGMENT D: VOLKSWAGEN TIGUAN, FORD KUGA AND BMW X1

Further up we find the D segment, that of the middle-high schools. Also in this case, the classic sedans have now been outclassed by SUVs and crossovers, in line with the overwhelming tastes of motorists, for a segment that accounts for 13% of the market with 193,952 cars registered. The best-selling model was the Volkswagen Tiguan with 16,063 units, accompanied on the podium by the Ford Kuga (13,654) and the BMW X1. Following Audi Q3 (13,056), Toyota Rav4 (8,983), Alfa Romeo Stelvio (8,172), Mercedes Gla (7,919), Audi Q5 (6,554), Cupra Formentor (5,747) and Skoda Octavia (5,719).

SEGMENT E: MERCEDES GLE, AUDI A6 AND BMW 5 SERIES

The E segment is that of luxury models, once the prerogative of large sedans but now densely populated with SUVs, even if some models – especially German ones – keep up. Obviously the relative weight is very low compared to the market, 2% of the total with 27,607 registrations. On the top step of the podium we find Mercedes Gle with 3,161 registrations, then Audi A6 (2,745) and Bmw 5 Series (2,195). Then Mercedes Gle Coupé (1,915), Bmw X5 (1,877), LR Range Rover Sport (1,685), Porsche Cayenne (1,500), Mercedes E-Class (1,429), Bmw X6 (1,391) and Audi Q8 (1,304).

SEGMENT F: PORSCHE 911, PORSCHE TAYCAN AND MASERATI GHIBLI

To conclude the F segment, that of sports cars and much sought-after flagships. Also in this case it is a market segment that counts on small numbers – 0.3% of total sales with 5,088 registrations – but with great appeal and extremely profitable for car manufacturers. At the top is the stainless Porsche 911 with 1,218 units registered in the course of 2021, followed by its sister Porsche Taycan (617) and the Maserati Ghibli (563). Then Mercedes S-Class (400), Porsche Panamera (334), Ferrari F8 (204), Jaguar F-Type (187), Ferrari Roma (165), Lamborghini Urus (159) and Bmw 8 Series (153).
