Geese have been playing together for a decade. When Cameron Winter (vocals), Emily Green (guitar), Dominic DiGesu (bass) and Max Bassin (drums) got together, they weren’t allowed to drive or drink beer. The Americans have retained their youthfulness and will be a rock institution in 2026. ROLLING STONE ranked their third album “Getting Killed” third among the best albums last year. Why? Because it contains songs that are “always moving, nervous, exciting, thrilling,” as our author Jan Jekal wrote in his justification.
Anyone who wants to renew rock still needs guitar solos that will be remembered in the 21st century. This includes the title song, which makes it into our list of 100 Best Guitar Solos managed. For Jaeden Pinder, the band’s guitar playing is lively like Tom Verlaine (Television) and dizzy like Radiohead in their middle phase:
“Sure, mysterious Geese frontman Cameron Winter gets most of the attention, but the band’s elliptical art-rock epiphanies wouldn’t have nearly as much impact without Emily Green’s guitar playing, especially on “Getting Killed.” ” The first half of the song is fireworks on all fronts, with each band member attacking their instrument, then abruptly launching into a lush and layered solo from Green. Her playing is supple and lively like that of Television’s Tom Verlaine, but also dizzying like that of mid-career Radiohead, and so masterful that you can imagine her pre-planning every note she plays before she strikes a string. “Getting Killed” is neither flashy nor unrestrained, but that’s not the point. Green’s style captivates with its minimalist flair.”
Is there a new album from Geese coming soon?
They may have borrowed Geese’s insouciance from New York neighbors the Strokes, although Winter’s distinctive voice is a challenge in itself. Geese have an advantage over their somewhat hardened colleagues in that every record can only sound wilder. While the Strokes’ output suddenly stopped in 2005, Winter and Co., as can be heard, tried out so many things in the last session that the next record could soon be on the horizon.
