The best cosmetics for men: we tested hair and beard products

We tested men’s cosmetics in a jar store and listed the best ones to make navigation easier.

Consumption of men’s cosmetic products is increasing and interest in skin and hair care is increasing. This means that the cosmetic market also offers more and more power products intended for men’s needs.

Male testers used to test skin care products for Tyyli.com, so this time we focused on hair and beard products.

This is how the test was done:

Nine men tested the products for at least a week. Twelve products intended for hair, beard and shaving were included in the test.

Hair products:

Keune Style Fiber Wax, 20 e, Value.

This is how it worked: The first feeling on the fingers was surprising: Fiber wax lives up to its name, i.e. it stretches, but not a bang. The product is inconspicuous and light on the hair. It gives a convenient posture, can be modified again, but does not bind the hair. Great for lovers of a natural finish, as the product does not have a strong hold. If you are looking for one, this is not the right product.

Special: Fresh and modern, not too strong fragrance world. Among hair waxes, patience is required, because stretching too quickly when grabbed from the jar can result in a mess.

Maria Nila Gabbro wax, 25 e, Maria Nila.

This is how it worked: On the hands, the wax is really soft and close to the composition of hand grease, however jagged and rougher than hand grease. Although the formula seems really greasy and shiny when applied to the hands, it is no longer so when applied to the hair. Quite comfortable to apply and a small amount of sufficient product goes a long way. Nice to use and rinse off hands. The scent is mild and slightly reminiscent of vaseline.

Special: The product has good spreadability and a pleasantly mild scent. Easy to wash from hands after application. Nice soft texture and easy to dispense from the jar to your hands.

Indola ACT NOW! Matte Wax, 14.90 e, Hair and Hole.

This is how it worked: For lovers of a matte finish. The first wax tried by the tester, which is challenging to spread on the hands. The composition is so hard that applying it to the hands without lumps requires quite a lot of work. Difficult to dose because the wax is already so tight in the jar itself. A little unnecessarily tight stuff, according to the tester. Wax has quite a bit of hold on the hair, which means that the hair requires quite a large amount of product for styling.

Special: Plus the product’s natural mineral raw materials. The world of fragrances did not convince the tester: the matte wax smells quite clay-like. Cons must be given for the product’s hard composition, which is challenging to wash off from hands even with soap.

Stmnt Grooming Goods Dry Clay, 28.90 e, M Rom.

This is how it worked: The wax is quite difficult to get out of the jar, as it is really hard. By simply rubbing its surface, the wax does not get properly on the fingers, but it has to be almost crushed with the nails. When you have enough wax on your palm, it is nice to rub it against your palms for application. It’s firm enough and slightly sticky for a good application feel. The wax has a matte surface and the aftertaste is very pleasant. No shine at all. Good spreadability and the hair looks clean even after application thanks to the very matte surface and spreadability. The scent of lavender and spices, among other things, is quite strong and perfumey: the tester even got comments from outsiders about this.

Special: The wax has good spreadability and a sticky texture. On the other hand, the minus is the strong smell and the particularly solid feel of the product in a jar.

Kérastase Genesis Homme Cire d’Épaisseur Texturisante styling wax, 39 e, Stockmann.

This is how it worked: The composition is quite thin and hand-greasy. However, when applied to the hair, the product is not greasy but matte. Doesn’t add shine and its consistency in the hair is thin. In the jar, it is quite soft and easy to dispense onto the fingers. Challenging to apply, because there is not much friction in the wax. Although the tester’s hair is quite thin and stiff, the product in question does not want to shape it very well. The modeling clay is therefore not very sufficient, as it has to be dosed liberally in order to shape the hair.

Special: The scent of modeling clay is quite pleasant and suitably mild. The minus is the weak friction, which makes it difficult to shape slightly stiffer hair. Suitable for softer and more flexible hair, because if the hair quality is a little stiffer, the valuable product will be used up a lot.

American Crew Daily Silver shampoo, 19.95 e, Hajuvesi.fi.

This is how it worked: An ideal vegan shampoo for gray hair, suitable even for daily use. The product has a clean and good manly scent. Hair care feeling. The tester noticed that the gray hair darkened by a degree with regular use.

Special: Contains up to 95 percent natural ingredients. The minus is the rather watery composition, which comes quite quickly from the jar to your hands.

Shaving:

Nivea Sensitive Pro Liquid Shaving Cream, 7.20 e, Prism.

This is how it worked: The liquid, light shaving cream was easy to use. Sufficient product, which was easy to dispense from the pump bottle. It foamed nicely, but you should be careful not to add too much water when applying. Good price-quality ratio and Plus that you can put the jar in the shopping cart on a trip to the grocery store.

Special: The skin felt calm and the product did not dry out. Contains organic hemp seed oil, which is supposed to soothe irritated skin from shaving. A convenient and pleasant product.

Ekopharma Men Calm Aftershave, 24.90 e, Cosmetologist shop.

This is how it worked: The forest-smelling aftershave serum of the Finnish company Ekopharma was an interesting new acquaintance. The tester does not normally regularly use special products after shaving, but this undoubtedly left a pleasant feeling on the face. The product promises to moisturize and care for the skin and reduce redness, and at least it didn’t feel unpleasant. A slightly expensive product for everyday use.

Special: The fresh product dries in an instant and does not leave the face feeling sticky. A forest scent might not be to everyone’s liking.

Beard oils:

Rokua Skincare beard oil, 39.90 e, Grass root.

This is how it worked: The product feels pleasant on the skin, and it clearly reduces the itching caused by a rough beard, especially on the tester’s sensitive skin. It also works well after shaving, e.g. on the neck, softening the skin. It helped relieve the itching caused by the beard and even acted as a substitute for facial oil after washing the face. The tester did not particularly like the woody scent of the product, although fortunately it was quite mild.

Special: Domestic natural cosmetics brand, all raw materials of which come from Finland. Special mention for the nice packaging with a wooden cap. A plus point is that the smell of the product was not too strong or perfumed like many other beard oils.

Elemis Smooth Result Shave & Beard Oil, 37 e, Skincity.

This is how it worked: In the test, the product was used as a beard oil, in which the product works perfectly. Compared to some other beard oils, the product leaves the beard feeling less oily. Therefore, you could imagine that it is also suitable for shorter beards, because very oily beard oils can make the skin greasy if the beard is not long enough and skin contact occurs. The shaving product was not tested, but it leaves a soothing feeling on the skin. The product has a fresh, refreshing and slightly herbal scent.

Special: The product works for many men and many beard styles. A strong smell can divide opinions if you are very sensitive to smells.

Ekopharma Men Soft beard oil, 19.90 e, Hilla’s shop.

This is how it worked: The vegan oil was quite effective in keeping the hair supple and soft. In addition, the shine of the beard increased. Pleasant composition, although the skin felt itchy from time to time under a longer beard. This could be because the tester had not used beard oil before. The pipette dispenser in the bottle was convenient to use and precise enough in dispensing, so less oil was dispensed.

Special: The domestic brand’s rich beard oil is made in Finland and contains, among other things, blueberry seed and jojoba oils. Good comfort of use and a softening and softening effect on beard hair. A woody, strong scent may not be to everyone’s liking.

Rokua Skincare Beard Brush, 24.90 e, Roku.

This is how it worked: A high-quality shaving brush from a domestic brand. Round brush of suitable size. The bristles are rough and compact enough for combing. The product is made of high-quality beech wood and Tampico plant fiber bristles. Works well in use.

Special: A traditional, high-quality beard brush that gets the job done. Domestic natural cosmetics brand, all raw materials of which come from Finland. Beautiful design.
