Were you confident or were you ready with lumpy armpits? Today it is an exciting day for the thousands of final exam students in Drenthe. After weeks of waiting, the phone call from school brings clarity.
“Passed in 2001”, Franciska begins her story. “I was at home but when there was a call, I didn’t dare to answer the phone. I was so nervous.” That turned out not to be necessary. “My mother finally came up with the announcement that I was successful. I remember that well!”
Tension is the common denominator in the reactions. Similarly at José, who had to wait a long time for the redeeming phone call. Or rather, the carrier pigeon. “We got the result by post,” she starts. “We lived at the end of the route. I had to wait until 3:30 pm for the redeeming message, while some classmates were partying from 9.30 am.”
There were more graduates with whom it was unnecessarily exciting. This applies, among others, to Katja who obtained her diploma in 1981. That was in time with ‘regular telephones’ with wiring.
At an unguarded moment she took a break for a message. “I would be called in the afternoon. At five o’clock I said: Crazy, I didn’t call yet.” The relief came from unexpected corner. “My mother said: oh yes there was a call and you succeeded. Was when you were gone.”
