Sequels may be the death of originality, but there are many that are long awaited. Here are the ones to mark in red on your calendar.
They are not the maximum expression of creativity, but they often reveal the ingenuity of the video game industry, when it comes to reinventing consolidated formulas and justifying that “2” after a beloved or simply well-known title. The sequels, or Italian-style sequels, will also be the spice of gaming this year, or at least they will help it keep the accounts in place in view of the next big thing.
Best sequels 2025 —
Here are the 5 most anticipated sequels of 2025.
The Outer Worlds 2
The Outer Worlds 2 made a rather surprising appearance at The Game Awards: not so much because we didn’t already know that the sci-fi role-playing game was in development (already a surprise in itself, at the time of the reveal), but rather because the launch was announced in 2025 – all things considered, just a few months after another Obsidian RPG, Avowed. The first chapter didn’t leave its mark, but it deserved a second chance that we hope it will take advantage of when it comes out (also on PS5) very soon.

Borderlands 4
Between one remaster and another, 6 years have passed since the launch of Borderlands 3, and the time was ripe for a new chapter. We don’t know if it was really necessary to bring back the looter shooter series, which has given its undeniable contribution to the genre but in a genre that has itself become tired, but the fact is that – unless according to the publisher Take-Two – even a a flat film, to say the least, contributed to further igniting the passion of the players. So, by popular acclaim, here is Borderlands 4.
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach
You love Hideo Kojima or you hate him, and in these parts you love him blindly. We have no idea what’s going on in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, and frankly we don’t even care to know. DS2 is one of those games that just has to come out. When it comes out we’ll play it, and we already know we’ll love it madly. It remains to be seen whether it will be as good as Metal Gear Solid 2 in terms of leaps from a great classic to a timeless gem (often literally).

Civilization 7
More sequels than that! Civilization has now reached its seventh chapter and, despite not being part of a genre that is easy to digest for the general public, it is undoubtedly one of those few names that do well in the mainstream regardless of the genre they belong to. Thanks to the multiplatform release and the foray into the modern era, Civilization 7 will easily be the most successful launch ever for Sid Meier’s saga.
Grand Theft Auto VI
We even tried not to include it in this list, but it was more followed than that… and more awaited than that. GTA 6 could rewrite the rules of the game once again, exactly as happened with the fifth chapter, although not necessarily this year. Rockstar has given its word, but we don’t really believe it: will it really be released in 2025? Maybe. Meanwhile, we already know that, when the time comes, we will head to Vice City one more time. And that, with us, there will be tens of millions of players. It will be a cathartic interlude in the life of the planet.
