That’s why Lizzo hid (too) long that she’s a Radiohead fan

In an interview for Vanity Fair magazine’s November issue, Lizzo revealed, among other things, that she hid the fact that she was a Radiohead fan for years as she grew up. According to her own statements, the reasons for this were years of bullying and the resulting insecurities, which she has now largely overcome.

Lizzo’s youth and the influence of rock music

In addition to rap, mainly from Houston, she mainly listened to the music of Radiohead when she was young. Due to the fear of even stronger bullying attacks, Lizzo concealed her love of the rock band’s music from her friends at the time.

“I went to a black school” tells Lizzo. “Predominantly black and brown, Caribbean, I had Nigerian friends… They listened to whatever was on the radio: Usher, Destiny’s Child, Ludacris – and I just liked Radiohead’s OK COMPUTER. I hid that even though I was in a rock band myself at the time. I didn’t want people around me making fun of me – they would be like, ‘White girl!’ said to me. (…) I really wanted to be accepted; not fitting in there hurt quite a bit.”

Over time, however, according to Lizzo in the interview, she learned not to bother with attempts at bullying. “My defense mechanism used to be humor. I became the class clown, which gave me a kind of confidence. And I have this kind of ‘social anxiety’ where I get louder and funnier the more stressed I’m actually.”

The musician only published a video on her Instagram channel on October 13:
