Just a few days into production, Helena Bonham Carter has left the fourth season of “The White Lotus” – HBO confirmed the departure on Friday.
“Shortly after filming the fourth season of ‘The White Lotus,’ it became clear that the character Mike White had written for Helena Bonham Carter was not a good fit on set,” HBO said in a statement (via Variety).
“The role will be significantly reimagined, rewritten and recast in the coming weeks. HBO, the producers and Mike White regret not being able to work with her, but remain avid fans and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon.”

Oscar nominee Bonham Carter was part of the second wave of casting announcements for The White Lotus season four, which is set in France – apparently including a plot line surrounding the Cannes Film Festival in May. “Season four follows a new group of guests and staff at the White Lotus over the course of a week during the Cannes Film Festival,” HBO announced earlier this month.
HBO left it open which role Bonham Carter should take on. The actress herself has not yet commented on her departure. The fourth season also stars Vincent Cassel, Steve Coogan, Chris Messina, AJ Michalka, Kumail Nanjiani, Chloe Bennet, Sandra Bernhard, Heather Graham, Max Greenfield, Rosie Perez and many more.
Will “Squid Game” now become “White Lotus”?
A wild thought. But both series are similar. (New) protagonists find themselves in a new environment from season to season, and betrayal and murder occur. If a next season of “Squid Game” is scheduled in the USA (and later seasons perhaps in Europe or Africa), it could lead to nerve-wracking situations.
The fact that turbo capitalism can be bad – the big message of “Squid Game” – applies to every country. Setting up a “Squid Game” season in America would have its own charm. Society is far more heterogeneous than in South Korea. Majorities, minorities, cultures and ethnicities, crammed together into a community of players, would cause entirely new conflicts.
