The reason is simple: With FC Bayern’s victory, BVB can look forward to unexpected millions in income.
In Berlin, FCB and VfB not only determined the new cup winner, but also the line-up for the “Franz Beckenbauer Supercup”. The final will be played on August 22nd parallel to the first DFB Cup main round, the venue is still open.
Since Bayern had already lifted the championship trophy, they were seeded as one of two Supercup participants. Normally, the winner of the DFB Cup is on the other side. Because Bayern also won the cup, a replacement is now needed. This can be found in the Bundesliga, where the second-placed team, in this case Borussia Dortmund, moves up to the Supercup.
Millions in income for BVB
In addition to a sporting spectacle, this fact brings BVB, above all, a financial advantage. The Supercup winner recently received three million euros in prize money, the final loser received at least two million. Money that BVB can put to good use.
It is by no means uncommon for Bayern to face Borussia Dortmund in the Supercup. For example, in 2019, 2020 and 2021, the two teams met three times in a row. Bayern won two duels, and in 2019 BVB had the better end on their side.
