Thanks to Zauber-Schott: McIlroy leads with Hovland at St Andrews

Four-time major champion Rory McIlroy and young Norwegian Viktor Hovland go into the final of the 150th British Open on Sunday as the hunted.

Northern Ireland’s McIlroy wowed golf fans on Saturday’s third round with a sensational eagle on the 10th hole. He shares the top of the leaderboard with Hovland (24) with 200 strokes and 16 strokes under par.

Cameron Young (USA) and Cameron Smith (Australia) also have hope on the legendary Old Course in St. Andrews, Scotland. However, both find themselves in the role of underdogs in the most traditional golf tournament in the world with twelve strokes under par.

Smith was still leading after two rounds but he played a 73 on the par-72 course on Saturday. Hovland has yet to record a top 10 result at a major.

Tiger Woods already failed on Friday

Superstar Tiger Woods failed at the cut after two rounds. The American struggled through pain again on Friday and had tears in his eyes when he received the 18th hole to great acclaim.

“Although disappointed to be going home, I’ve had an incredible week at St Andrews celebrating 150 years of history and the game we love,” he wrote on Twitter: “I want to share this place with everyone thank you for the memories he gave me and the fans for adding the reception at 18 to this list.”

No professional from Germany qualified for the only major tournament outside of the United States. Defending champion Collin Morikawa (USA) failed like Woods at the cut.
