Although melanism occurs in various animal species, it is very rare in seals, Pieterburen reports. Yet it is not the first time that a black seal has been brought in. “We also rescued one in 2017 that was completely black. It makes such a find extra special,” says Marco.

At the seal center, Ebbie is given all the time and nutrition to regain her strength. As soon as she is strong enough and can catch her own food, she is released into her natural habitat, Pieterburen writes the website.
