The shelter she has at home started she by chance three years ago. Wenda caught dogy in 2022. “The dog was taken from someone from the house and it was asked if we wanted to fit the animal for so long. The man could no longer take care of himself, but no longer for the dog.” After that, a collection campaign was started in which no less than 3,000 euros was raised.

Dog Woody has lived for three weeks and eventually died due to heart problems. “But then there was still 1,500 euros on the bill. That was not ours, but from Texelaars. And how do you give it back? This is how our Woody’s Safe Haven Foundation originated. We didn’t know it would be that big, because we never thought this,” says Wenda.

More than 300 animals in the shelter

Texelaars know how to find her quickly afterwards. There are now more than three hundred animals, including pigs, cats, a turkey and 65 roosters. “Some people think they have bought five chicks, then it turns out to be three ladies and two gentlemen afterwards. Then they are released in the dunes and it is thought that the animals will save themselves. But that is not the case. The chickens used to go in the soup, but they don’t do that anymore.”
