Tesla is raising the prices of its Model 3 in China – and is still enticing with improvements. An overview of the current changes and their potential impact on the market.

• Prices of all variants of Model 3 increase by 3,600 yuan
• Basic version now offers a range of 634 kilometers according to the CLTC standard, an increase of 28 kilometers
• Buyers must continue to expect delivery times of 1 to 3 weeks

New prices and technical improvements

Tesla has moderately increased prices for the Model 3 in China, affecting all variants. The standard model with rear-wheel drive now costs 235,500 yuan, which corresponds to around 32,100 euros. Previously, the price was 231,900 yuan. The price of the long-range four-wheel drive model has also been adjusted, which is now available for 275,500 yuan (about 37,600 euros), compared to the previous price of 271,900 yuan. The performance model also saw a price increase and now costs 339,500 yuan (around 46,300 euros), instead of the previous 335,900 yuan, according to CNEV Post.

In addition to the price adjustment, Tesla has particularly improved the range of the basic version. This now offers a range of 634 kilometers according to the CLTC standard, which corresponds to an increase of 28 kilometers compared to the previous value of 606 kilometers. The long-distance and performance variants, however, remain technically unchanged. With the improved range, Tesla wants to appeal to buyers who want to cover longer distances and at the same time benefit from further technological developments.

Strong competition in the Chinese market

The Chinese electric vehicle market is not only the world’s largest, but also one of the most competitive. In addition to Tesla, domestic manufacturers such as BYD and Xpeng are primarily competing for market share. Xpeng recently introduced a new model available for around $22,000. With an integrated autopilot system and a cheaper price, this model positions itself as a potential competitor to Tesla, especially in the mid-price segment.

According to Wall Street Online, Tesla recorded stable sales figures in China last year. Nevertheless, experts see the low-cost alternatives from Chinese manufacturers as an increasing threat to Tesla’s position. Competition is becoming tougher, especially in the entry-level segment, as BYD and Xpeng are specifically focusing on cheaper vehicles that are still equipped with modern technology.

Strategy: Justify price increases with innovation

By optimizing the range, Tesla wants to demonstrate its technological lead and justify the price increase. At the same time, with this measure Tesla is strengthening its positioning in the premium segment, where wealthy customers are willing to pay a higher price for innovation and quality. Despite the challenges posed by strong competition, Tesla remains competitive through its ability to innovate.
