Tesla is launching a new long-range version of the Model Y in China with a range of up to 800 km. This is made possible by a new LG NMC battery – a step that could further expand Tesla’s range lead.

• New Model Y+ in China with a range of up to 800 km thanks to LG NMC battery
• 225 kW rear-wheel drive, around 34,900 euros, placed between the basic and all-wheel drive version
• Possible exports could boost Tesla’s market position and shares

New Model Y+ registered in China – 800 km range according to CLTC

Tesla is continuing to expand its electric SUV range: a new long-range version of the Model Y is about to be launched in China. According to the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the variant with the abbreviation “Model Y+” has been officially registered. The rear-wheel drive car uses an NMC battery from LG Energy Solution with around 78 kWh capacity and thus achieves an impressive 800 kilometers of range according to the CLTC cycle – which corresponds to around 650 to 700 kilometers according to WLTP. This means that the new model outperforms the previous dual-motor version by around 16 percent increase in range, as The Driven reports.

Battery technology and positioning in the portfolio

For the new Model Y, Tesla is using modern nickel-cobalt-manganese cells from LG Energy Solutions – the same technology that is already used in the Model 3 Long Range RWD, according to CarNewsChina. The rear-wheel drive remains, as do the familiar body dimensions of around 4.80 meters long and 1.89 tons unladen weight. In terms of price, the new version is likely to be between the basic model with CATL battery and the all-wheel drive version – around 288,500 yuan or around 34,900 euros. In Europe, the comparable Model Y Premium RWD with the same battery technology achieves a WLTP range of 622 kilometers, as Auto Motor Sport reports.

Perspective: Global rollout and significance for Tesla shares

It is currently unclear whether the new long-haul version of the Model Y will remain exclusively in China or also reach other markets. However, according to The Driven, Tesla is considering offering the model in countries such as Australia and Europe in the future. Such a move would significantly strengthen the company’s position in the global long-haul segment and could bring Tesla shares back into the focus of investors. At the same time, the new battery technology shows that Tesla is consistently developing its range strategy and thus expanding its technological lead over the competition.
