When Elon Musk opened the Tesla Diner in Hollywood in July, the media hype was enormous. Only a few weeks later there is little left of the initial euphoria.
• Retro-futuristic concept of diner, supercharger and drive-in cinema
• Just two weeks later: Many popular dishes are canceled
• Discussions as to whether the project becomes a symbol for Musk’s overambitious announcements
Vision with disillusionment
Musk had already presented the idea for the diner in 2018. In Hollywood, he now implemented her with great effort. The opening attracted not only Tesla fans, but also tourists and curious residents. The combination of retro design, cinema screen and high-tech promised a new experience and aroused expectations that were high.
Menomen and opening times
After two weeks, management pulled the ripcord. Numerous dishes disappeared from the offer, including popular breakfast options, the lush “Epic Bacon” or vegetarian burgers. Chef Eric Greenspan told La Eater that the demand was greater than expected, which is why the supply was slimming and at the same time wanted to test new ideas such as soft-care ice cream or fresh biscuits. At the same time, the opening times were also adjusted: Instead of having open around the clock as originally, the dinner remains closed between midnight and six in the morning – except for Tesla drivers who can order via the on -board system.
Critical voices are increasing
In the review of the restaurant critic Tejal Rao in the New York Times, she described the restaurant as a distraction from the company’s actual problems. Comments also appeared in forums and on platforms such as Reddit, which see the project as a further example of Musks Schlang for large -scale announcements and bumpy implementation.
Parallels to Tesla’s core problems
The start of the dinner reminds of problems that Tesla also accompany in his core business. Again and again there were delays in model starts, quality defects or overambitious schedules. In addition, the last business figures remained behind the expectations and the sales in the car division declined. In this light, the diner looks less like a harmless side project, but rather like a reflection of the company’s current challenges.
Nevertheless, Musk plans the expansion
Despite the bumpy premiere, Musk is already thinking of other locations, including the SpaceX daring in Texas and along international Supercharger routes. It remains uncertain whether the concept is economically. The quick decline in the event of offer and opening times at the first location indicates that the path to a stable operation should be longer and stony than planned. For investors, the question arises whether such side projects strengthen or risk the reputation of the brand in the long term, to distract from the core business.
