Tesla takes back used cybertrucks for the first time – the balance sheet seems sobering. What is behind the program and why the model for Tesla could become a problem.

• Return program started
• Cybertruck as a flop
• Dill down production

More than a year after the first deliveries of the cybertruck, Tesla now begins to accept used models of his futuristic e-pickup as a trade-in. So far, this has not been the case – a fact that had apparently caused astonishment among observers, especially since Tesla has so far taken his own vehicles back without any problems. Now it turns out: the restraint should have had good reasons. The loss of value of the cyberruck seems unprecedented.

As can be seen from reports from the cybertruck owners club and the portal Electrek, Tesla currently accepts at least models of the so -called Foundation Series as a return. However, the first official estimates show that buyers have to expect an enormous discount. A Cybertruck AWD Foundation Series, which was sold in 2024 for $ 100,000 and only drove around 6,000 miles, is now bought back by Tesla for just $ 65,400-a loss of value of $ 34.6 within one year.

A flop with an announcement

The cybertruck had started with a lot of media roar, the expectations high: According to his own statement, Tesla collected over a million reservations in the advance booking phase. But with the start of the series in autumn 2023, the disillusionment followed: higher prices, weaker performance and a design that polarizes – only around 40,000 reservations were probably converted into actual orders. At the same time, Tesla refrained from artificial shortage at Foundation Series, apparently produced more vehicles than actually there was demand, and now seems to be sitting on a growing inventory. According to Electrek, some models remained unsuccessful for months. Used car dealers were also reluctant because Tesla did not take any cybertrucks back for a long time. On online platforms such as Cargurus, real loss of value is now up to 45 percent within the first year.

Loss of trust and production stop

The result: More and more first buyers are trying to get rid of their vehicles – despite the proud price and the supposedly limited availability. According to his own statements, Tesla has now significantly shut down the production of the cybertruck. Some vehicles from the Foundation Series are said to have even been sub -labeled in order to be able to sell them as regular cybertrucks. It remains to be seen whether Tesla can stabilize the market situation with the return offer. One thing is clear: the combination of disappointed buyers, massive loss of value and slow demand throws a shadow on the prestige project of the US electric car maker-and harbors the risk of affecting confidence in New Tesla models in the long term.
