The US electric car manufacturer Tesla in Grünheide near Berlin categorically rejects the introduction of a collective agreement.
“This year there was a wage increase of two percent in the relevant collective agreement,” said plant manager André Thierig to the German Press Agency. “Because we are in a different economic situation than the entire industry, we were able to increase wages by twice as much – by four percent. Since the start of production, there has been a wage increase of more than 25 percent in less than four years.”
The IG Metall Berlin-Brandenburg-Saxony is fighting for a collective wage. “Without a collective agreement, pay at Tesla remains significantly below the level in other car factories in Germany,” said district manager Jan Otto to the dpa. “The Tesla management is badmouthing the collective agreement by using its lowest pay group. In automobile plants, however, the lowest two pay groups are not assigned at all.”
Works council election at Tesla next year
A one-off special payment of 600 euros was agreed for employees in the metal and electrical industry in 2024, as well as an increase in monthly wages by 2.0 percent from April 2025 and by 3.1 percent from April 2026. IG Metall and Tesla have been incompatible for a long time.
Plant manager Thierig also rejects a reduction in working hours, which the union is fighting for, and sees it as a risk to the location’s competitiveness. “For me, the discussion about a 35-hour week is a red line that we will not cross,” said Thierig.
There will be a works council election at Tesla in 2026, which is very important from the plant manager’s point of view: “It will decide whether we can continue on our path to success independently, flexibly and unbureaucratically in the future,” said Thierig. “I personally cannot imagine that the decision-makers in the USA will continue to push ahead with the expansion of the factory if the majority vote goes in favor of IG Metall.” In the 2024 works council election, IG Metall was the largest group, but the majority of seats went to non-union representatives.
