Tesla competitor Nikola concludes supply contract for hydrogen trucks with Plug Power

• Plug Power receives up to 75 Nikola Tre FCEV
• Decarbonization of energy top priority
• Support for the construction of a hydrogen hub

Tesla rival partners with Plug Power

The US vehicle manufacturer and Tesla competitor Nikola has – in contrast to Musk’s electric car manufacturer – specialized in operating its semitrailers with hydrogen. Now the group, which only went public in 2020 via SPAC, is working together with another well-known player from the hydrogen industry. In mid-December, Nikola announced in a press release that it had entered into a strategic partnership with the US fuel cell manufacturer Plug Power. The new partner Nikolas is characterized above all by emission-free transport and supply solutions with hydrogen.

Up to 75 hydrogen trucks for plug power

The core of the cooperation is the purchase of up to 75 Nikola Tre FCEV semi-trailers. According to the manufacturer, the fuel cell vehicle should come onto the market in the second half of 2023 and have a range of up to 800 kilometers. With the expansion of the Plug Power fleet with the Nikola FCEV, the fuel cell specialist wants to come a step closer to its goal of promoting the decarbonization of energy. Specifically, the semi-trailers in combination with Plug’s liquid hydrogen tankers are to transport green hydrogen to numerous customers in North America, according to the announcement. “Today’s announcement demonstrates Plug’s leadership in the green hydrogen economy and its ability to make hydrogen adoption as easy as possible by teaming up with industry pioneers like Nikola,” said Plug Power SCO Sanjay Shrestha. “Our vertically integrated solutions, tailored to individual customer needs, include hydrogen production plants or hydrogen fuel delivery, whichever is preferred.”

Hydrogen hub planned in Arizona

However, the new partnership between the two hydrogen giants goes beyond the delivery of the trucks, according to the release. It was only in October 2022 that Nikola announced the construction of a hydrogen hub in Buckeye, Arizona. In an early phase, around 30 tons of hydrogen per day are to be produced here, but after the plant has been completely expanded, up to 150 tons are to be produced here every day. This is to be done by Plug Power’s liquefaction system, Nikola informs. The project could not only facilitate the launch of the Nikola Tre FCEV, but also fuel the expansion of Nikola’s hydrogen energy business, the announcement said.

“Shared Vision”

In addition, Nikola and Plug Power signed a supply contract for more than 100 tons of green hydrogen per day to go to the vehicle manufacturer. Another part of the contract is the option for a higher delivery volume, should the need arise. “Nikola and Plug share a shared vision for sustainable, efficient energy solutions that supports our commitment to decarbonizing the transportation industry,” said Carey Mendes, head of Nikola’s energy division. “This strategic relationship will help underpin Nikola’s ambitious growth plans, expand its hydrogen energy business and support the launch of Nikola’s zero-emission Class 8 trucks.”
