Terzic: BVB becomes champion, “I just don’t know when” – sees improvement

Hesitated before returning to the coaching bench

Coach Edin Terzic from Borussia Dortmund has at least made a cautious master announcement. “You can be sure that we want nothing more than to become German champions,” he said on “19:09 – the black and yellow talk” from “Ruhr news‘ and ‘Radio 91.2’. He is also sure that BVB will become champion. “I just don’t know when,” Terzic added with a smile. The runner-up is currently in second place behind Union Berlin, but three points ahead of series champions FC Bayern, who will come to Dortmund in the game after next.

Basically, he doesn’t want to look too far into the future, said the 39-year-old, “if I don’t even know who can play in Cologne in ten days”. He also doesn’t look too much at Bayern, which is currently weakening. “We only compare ourselves to ourselves yesterday,” said Terzic evasively, but with a clear goal: “We will not stop working to come back to Borsigplatz one day, then with you spectators.”

He himself is definitely “BVB fan, I can’t and don’t want to hide that at all,” said Terzic. But that’s exactly why he hesitated when he was asked to become the head coach of the professionals after the interim period in 2021. “Why now?” he asked himself. And was aware: “I’ll sign the contract as the next ex-coach.” As a coach, he was “only ever as good as the result on Saturday,” added Terzic. “But I want to try to make the best use of the time between signing and this point and give everything that I can offer.”

Terzic “of course” sees further need for optimization in the BVB squad

Terzic was satisfied with the number of points so far after seven matchdays. “We really wanted the 15 points and we deserved them,” even if the BVB coach admitted: “I wasn’t satisfied with the performance at the beginning.” His focus so far has been on stabilizing the shaky defense, ” because last season we often had to score two or three goals to win games.” BVB now won four of the five victorious Bundesliga games minimally 1-0. However, Terzic is aware that it was the spectacular attacking football “that we all fell in love with”.

BVB’s start to the season was particularly influenced by the serious illness of newcomer Sébastien Haller (28), who was diagnosed with testicular cancer and cost 31 million euros. “We lost our top scorer in Erling Haaland, we spent a lot of money to sign a replacement. But the record transfer wasn’t on the field for a minute,” said Terzic. “But above all there was the human aspect. It was a huge shock for all of us.”

“Of course” there is still a need for optimization in the BVB squad, Terzic said with a grin, but he can’t be elicited when it comes to transfers. “I relate that to working with the squad I have.” And that’s where Terzic sees success: “I see an increase in many processes, I see a development in the guys who are here.”
