Two years after his departure from Borussia Dortmund, Edin Terzic could devote himself to a new task. As the pay TV channel “Sky” reports, the 43-year-old is in advanced negotiations with the Spanish club Athletic Bilbao. Terzic is supposed to succeed club legend Ernesto Valverde, who announced his departure in the summer.
Update April 23, 9:36 p.m.: According to new information from “Sky”, the deal is perfect. Terzic will receive a contract until 2028. The local media “deia.eus” also reported on it previously. However, an announcement is not expected in the near future. The reason for this is that the club wants to respect Valverde as a person and the focus should continue to be on sports. Bilbao still wants to reach the European Cup (to the table).
It would be Terzic’s first head coaching position outside of Dortmund. He coached the black and yellow between December 2020 and June 2021 and July 2022 and June 2024. In total, he sat on the BVB bench for 128 games, won the DFB Cup in 2021, almost became German champions in 2023 and led the club to the final of the Champions League in 2024. In 91 games in the Bundesliga he scored an average of 1.97 points – only five coaches in history have been better.
Valverde’s third term in Bilbao ends in the summer after four years. The 62-year-old Spaniard has coached the club since the 2022/23 season and was previously active for the Basques between 2003 and 2005 and 2013 and 2017. In total he played 498 games, meaning he will break the 500 game mark by the end of the season. In 2024 he won the Copa del Rey with Athletic for the first time in 40 years.
After his time at BVB, Terzic was linked to various clubs. These included Juventus Turin, Tottenham Hotspur, AS Monaco and Bayer Leverkusen.
