This week the House of Representatives votes on the asylum laws. “These two laws are really important. In terms of the cabinet, these two laws are crucial to get a grip on migration. We make every effort to ensure that these laws get a majority,” emphasizes demissionary Prime Minister Schoof in his press conference.

The outcome does not seem very hopeful after last week’s debate. A political majority are faltering. With a lot of cups of coffee, Keijzer tries to cross the law line.

‘This is the moment to do something about the asylum inflow’

A majority is needed in both the Second Chamber. Support from PVV in the Lower House is crucial for a majority. And certainly for the Senate, the consent of the CDA is needed again.

But those parties are not yet on a line. “Part of the Chamber does not think it is strict enough. The other part thinks the measures is going too far or does not think the moment is good. All parties say they want to do something about the inflow, this is the moment. I think it is extremely unfortunate if you want to push it out for you,” emphasizes Keijzer.

CDA requires adjustment, PVV Timing

The CDA wants to cross the asylum laws, but requires an adjustment. With regard to the CDA, the two -state system must simultaneously enter into the European Migration Pact, which will be on the agenda for next June. But the PVV does not want to agree with a ‘weak extract’ of the asylum laws. “We are not going to let our feet hang to the CDA,” the PVV sniffed in the debate last week.

At the same time, the PVV asks for a tightening, the party wants to arrange the withdrawal of the Spreading Act in the asylum measures Act. But that is already arranged by Keijzer in another proposal “I am working on it. It is just like a pregnancy. When it is ready, it will come,” said the minister in the debate last week. It is precisely for the PVV that it is ‘very important’ that it is regulated in the asylum measures law.

Not yet white smoke

In the meantime, Keijzer tries to convince the MPs by drinking cups of coffee “I have contact with MPs what they need, but it is not yet the case that there is white smoke,” the minister explains.

“If the laws don’t get there, it’s not me. There are two laws that announce measures. The question is as a party; are you going to do what you always say? Limit the inflow?”

‘MPs have to talk to each other’

The asylum minister advises the MPs to have a conversation with each other “if the changes of the CDA are adopted, it is not strict enough for the PVV. An average Dutch person looks at this and thinks” What are you doing? ” The MPs will have to talk to each other. ”

Whether the laws are going to get a majority will be clear this week ‘I am a creative thinker and a whole lot is possible. But the question is with the PVV and the CDA. And with D66. That party has indicated that it wants to do something about migration. Show. These laws limit the intake, if they don’t make it, we lose the moment, “emphasizes Keijzijzer.

Asylum laws

With these two asylum laws, the cabinet wants to focus on ‘the strictest asylum policy ever’. The Asylum Measures Act includes the abolition of a permanent residence permit, limiting the period of a temporary asylum permit from five to three years, shortening nuclear families and measures to make asylum procedures more efficient.

The other proposal therefore consists of the so -called reintroduction of the two -state system, which makes a distinction between people who flee from a war zone and people who are personally prosecuted. This gives extra possibilities to limit the influx of nicizers into the second group.
