Tennis star Swiatek proud: I proved I can handle the pressure

Tennis star Iga Swiatek was especially proud after her victory over Ons Jabeur in the final of the US Open. The Polish number 1 in the world was previously seen by many as a title favorite, but she herself did not think that so obvious. “I didn’t necessarily expect much from it. This tournament was really a challenge,” said 21-year-old Swiatek. “I proved myself mentally and I coped well with the pressure. It was a great tournament.”

Swiatek won Roland Garros earlier this year and that caused a lot of excitement in her country. “Tennis is becoming increasingly popular in Poland. What this victory means? I will see that when I get home,” said the winner, who had words of comfort for Jabeur, who is still waiting for her first grand slam victory after the previous defeat in the final at Wimbledon. “I’m sure you’ll win one someday, don’t worry.”

Due to her place in the final, Jabeur rises to second place in the world ranking, although she did not really want that right after the match. “I’m very disappointed, even though Iga deserved to win. I don’t really love her now, but it’s okay,” joked Jabeur, whose achievements mean a lot for tennis in Tunisia and Africa. “Hopefully I can inspire new generations and this is the start of a lot of beautiful things. I keep working hard, then that title must come soon.”
