Tennis star Russian skips Rosmalen grass tournament

Tennis star Arantxa Rus will not participate in the grass tournament in Rosmalen next month. She made this decision following the decision of the ATP and WTA not to award points for the world ranking at Wimbledon.

“At the same time as Rosmalen, there is also a WTA tournament on clay in Valencia and because there are no points to be earned at Wimbledon, I prefer to continue my clay season,” said Rus (31) after her defeat at Roland Garros. The best Dutch tennis star lost in Paris in three sets to the Kazakh Elena Rybakina (1-6 7-5 2-6).

During the last edition of the only WTA tournament on Dutch soil, in 2019, Rus reached the second round. She then lost to Kiki Bertens.

The grass tournament in Rosmalen starts on Monday 6 June. The event is a preparation tournament for Wimbledon, where no points for the world ranking can be earned this year. This was decided by the tennis associations in response to the British decision to ban Russian and Belarusian tennis players because of the war in Ukraine.
