Fought to the limit – and even won in the end. That’s how Frances Tiafoe’s match at the Australia Open could be summed up.

Tennis professional Frances Tiafoe caused a stir in his opening match at the Australian Open in more than just a sporting way. In the duel against the Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech, the American had to take an unusual break: In the fourth set, Tiafoe vomited on the sidelines, but continued playing shortly afterwards and ultimately won the five-set thriller (7:6 (7: 2), 6:3, 4:6, 6:7 (4:7), 6:3).

After the victory, the 26-year-old took the incident with humor. “Things like that happen, but it’s funny the stuff I’ve been associated with since then,” Tiafoe said. The short interruption was due to the situation, he explained: “If it had been another event, I would probably have left it alone. But here you have to put everything on one card.”

However, the two-time US Open semi-finalist did not blame the high temperatures or the food for his discomfort. “I threw up all the electrolytes and water,” he said, adding: “It wasn’t the heat either. When I threw up, I felt like I could be out of here in two or five minutes.” His condition after the match? “Terrible, it was terrible,” he admitted frankly.

For Tiafoe, his perseverance paid off: With the success over Rinderknech, he secured his place in the second round, where he will now face the Hungarian Fabian Marozsan.
