Two years after retiring, German tennis great Angelique Kerber returns to the big stage for a very special moment. The three-time Grand Slam winner gets her well-deserved farewell match, creating an emotional highlight in the tennis calendar.
On June 20th, Kerber will swing the racket one last time on the big stage before the official start of the WTA tournament in Bad Homburg, where she acts as tournament director. “Bild” first reported this.
Her opponent will be none other than Ana Ivanovic. Like Kerber, the 38-year-old Serbian is also a former world number one and a long-time companion and close friend.
For Kerber it is the ideal backdrop: “It is the perfect stage for a special day with lots of emotions,” the 2018 Wimbledon winner was quoted in “Bild”.
Kerber ended her career after the 2024 Olympics
The former world number one is already looking forward to the last duel with Ivanovic: “I’m really looking forward to Ana, because somehow this match closes a circle. We’ve known each other for a really long time, she’s one of my best friends and we’ve spent a lot of time together on and off the court.”
The farewell game will take place as part of the tournament opener in Bad Homburg. Kerber won the event in Hesse himself five years ago. In the first edition of the tournament, she prevailed against the then world-class player Petra Kvitova, who has also now ended her professional career.
The exhibition match against Ana Ivanovic should be a last big moment on the tennis court for both players. For Kerber, her career will finally end after she ended her active professional career at the Olympic Games in Paris in August 2024.
