At the US Open, the last grand slam tennis tournament of the season, world number one women’s singles Iga Swiatek and second-seeded men’s singles Rafael Nadal advanced to the round of 16.
The sixth day of the tournament held in New York City was completed with the matches in the evening session.
Polish Swiatek, two-time grand slam champion, faced Lauren Davis of the USA, who was 105th in the classification, in the third round match. Defeating his opponent 2-0 with 6-3 and 6-4 sets, Swiatek matched with German Jule Niemeier in the last 16 rounds.
In the struggle of the two former grand slam champions, Czech Petra Kvitova (21) beat Spain’s Garbine Muguruza (9) 5-7, 6-3 and 7-6 in sets 2-1 and advanced. Kvitova will face USA’s Jessica Pegula (8) in the round of 16.
In women’s singles, Jessica Pegula (8), Danielle Collins (19), Victoria Azarenka (26) won the fourth round ticket, while Belinda Bencic (13) lost 2-1 to Karolina Pliskova in this round and was eliminated.
SPANISH RACKETS NADAL AND ALCARAZ TURNED WITHOUT SET
2nd seeded Spaniard Rafael Nadal in men’s singles left the 91st place Frenchman Richard Gasquet out of the tournament with 6-0, 6-1 and 7-5 sets. Nadal’s opponent in this round was Frances Tiafoe (22) from the USA.
3rd seeded Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz passed the 43rd number US Jenson Brooksby 6-3 sets without difficulty and was paired with Croatian Marin Cilic (15) in the next round.
Russian tennis player Andrey Rublev (9), on the other hand, defeated Canadian Denis Shapovalov (19) 6-4, 2-6, 6-7, 6-4 and 7-6 3-2 and remained in the last 16 players.
Great Britain’s Cameron Norrie (7), Jannik Sinner (11), Marin Cilic (15) and Frances Tiafoe (22) got their fourth round ticket.
