Tennis legend Venus Williams will start again at the US Open. The 45-year-old has been the oldest player at the tournament for a long time.
The US Open in New York get prominent reinforcements: Venus Williams will compete again this year at the last Grand Slam tournament of the year. The 45-year-old received a wildcard for the main field from the organizer. The tournament runs from August 24th to September 7th.
The American had already won the tournament in Flushing Meadows in 2000 and 2001. According to the International Tennis Association (ITF), this year she will be the oldest single player at the US Open since Renee Richards, who started in 1981 at the age of 47.
In addition to the single gamecard, Williams had previously been granted a start-up authorization for the mixed double. At the current Masters tournament in Cincinnati, she also started by wildcard, but was eliminated there in the first round.
In her career over three decades, Venus Williams won seven Grand Slam titles in singles. Together with her sister Serena Williams, she won 14 more in doubles and two in mixed. There are also four Olympic wins.
Most recently, she had revealed health problems before her uterine surgery in an emotional post. “I was told that I was inoperable. I was told that I could bleed away on the operating table. I was told that I should look for a surrogate mother and give up hope for her own children,” wrote the American on Instagram.
A year was her operation, in which a fibroid was removed, among other things. “I was diagnosed incorrectly. I was not treated for years.” It is important to work for your own health.
“I suffered from severe anemia, paralyzing pain, severe bleeding and unusually frequent menstrual cycles for many years. That impaired my tennis and my career,” she said.
