Boris Becker is not only a tennis legend, but also an ardent football fan. The six-time Grand Slam champion draws a sobering conclusion after the German national team’s nasty defeat in Austria.
“Austria deserved to win against Germany! Unfortunately it’s the truth…” Becker said on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday evening.
The tennis icon had already commented on the appearance of the German national soccer team in Vienna several times.
Even in the early stages, Becker noted critically that things were “not really going well” with the DFB team. With the score at half-time at 0-1 from a German perspective, the 56-year-old praised the substitution of Thomas Müller. “I miss him when he’s NOT playing… someone with personality/presence!” said Becker.
But shortly after the restart, it was not Müller who was the focus, but Leroy Sané. The FC Bayern offensive man was sent off with a red card after an assault against Phillipp Mwene. “Please watch the slow motion carefully… who became aggressive first… finally we have music in the game!”, said the three-time Wimbledon winner about the incident.
“A certain speechlessness” with Boris Becker
“Now there is a complicated task for Nagelsmann… let’s see!” Becker added. In the end, the German national team even had to admit defeat to their old rivals 0-2. “A certain level of speechlessness has set in…” Becker struggled with the result.
The fact is: the DFB team has reached a new low around seven months before the home European Championship. “It can’t be any worse right now,” said captain Ilkay Gündogan on “ZDF”.
“We must not fall into the role of victim now. We have to accept that there is an incredible amount of work in all positions,” reacted national coach Julian Nagelsmann.
