After the end of his tennis career, Andy Murray tried to ski. That resulted in an embarrassing story.
With the tennis racket in his hand, he was one of the best players in his generation, winning Wimbledon and Olympic gold twice. On skis, however, Andy Murray cut a less good figure. The Brit, who ended his career last year, now revealed this in the “Sporting Misadventures” podcast.
There he spoke about a skiing holiday that he recently undertook with his family. “The first two days were shocking,” said Murray. At the beginning he couldn’t even get up from the ski lifts. “My wife refused to go to the lift with me because it was just embarrassing. I just couldn’t get up,” the 37-year-old continued. So he had to drive with strangers who had lifted him down from the lift.
But it was particularly embarrassing on the slopes: “On the first day I was sitting on the mountain,” said Murray. At the end of the first day, the lift, which was supposed to bring him back to the mountain, would have closed. However, there was another lift a little further down on the mountain. His brother -in -law and he decided to continue there. “I can’t ski, I didn’t know how to continue,” said Murray again. They were initially on a slopes for beginners, but at the end it continued with slopes for advanced users.
“We continued about 400 or 500 meters, arrived at the lift. But it was also closed. The guy who served the lift said the only way to get on was down the mountain,” Murray described the dilemma. He pointed out that he could not ski, but the employee only repeated his statement.
“We asked him how far it was and he said that there were still about three kilometers to down,” said Murray. Since it was already late a day, the slopes had already been iced. “I had no idea how to stop. I was down 500 meters a tight slope and I thought when I tried to drive a curve, I drive from the slopes. So in principle I just went down the mountain” Murray his adventure.
“I rush past my brother-in-law that can ski and just called: I’m in problems here. I don’t know how to stop,” said the ex-tennis champion. “I just thrown myself on the floor and then tried to slide down on my ass, which didn’t really work. I finally arrived at a restaurant after I had lifted and ran the ski.”
There he had to be recovered by rescuers on a snowmobile. An extremely uncomfortable situation for him: “The rescuers are angry because they are usually drunken British at the end of the day that stuck on the mountain,” he reported. “They should actually help people who are injured, and not just any idiot who thought he could get it down the slopes at the end of the day. So that was a bit embarrassing,” said Murray.
The skiing holiday nevertheless took a conciliatory conclusion for Murray. At the end of the trip he was even able to enjoy skiing and his children had had a lot of fun.
