Tennis: Germany conqueror Canada in the Davis Cup final

Germany-conqueror Canada has reached the final of the traditional Davis Cup and is aiming for the first title in the national tennis competition.

Two days after beating the German team, the Canadians also defeated Italy 2-1 in the semifinals. In the final on Sunday (1 p.m.), the North Americans meet 28-time winners Australia.

The Felix Auger-Aliassime/Vasek Pospisil doubles secured the decisive point with a 7:6 (7:2), 7:5 against Matteo Berrettini/Fabio Fognini.

Previously, Lorenzo Sonego had put the Italians ahead with a 7: 6 (7: 5), 6: 7 (5: 7), 6: 4 against Denis Shapovalov. World number six Auger-Aliassime started the turnaround with a 6:3, 6:4 against Lorenzo Musetti.

Final opponent Australia prevailed against Croatia in a thriller on Friday evening. In doubles, Max Purcell/Jordan Thompson made it into the final with 6:7 (3:7), 7:5, 6:4 against the world-class duo Nikola Mektic/Mate Pavic. It gives Australia its first Davis Cup title since 2003.

Without top player Alexander Zverev, the German team lost to Canada on Thursday and missed the second semi-final in a row at the Davis Cup. The last German triumph was 29 years ago.
