US tennis player Serena Williams has suffered a dramatic defeat on the much-anticipated return after a year-long hiatus. The 23-time Grand Slam tournament winner lost on Tuesday evening in 3:10 hours 5: 7, 6: 1, 6: 7 (7:10) against French Harmony Tan (read more about this here).
The 40-year-old now has to wait for her 24th Grand Slam win, which would equal Australia’s Margaret Court’s record. The US press writes about Williams’ exit:
“New York Times”: “Williams, who has been losing to variation-loving opponents in her prime, often looked startled at the start. She also seemed taut as a piano string, struggling to let her natural power flow, missing numerous volleys and approach shots as she worked to develop herself to move sideways.”
“Washington Post”: “As things went on, things got dicey. Williams started at an 86mph serve and spent the next two games playing the kind of erratic tennis you’d expect from someone who hasn’t had one for a year The fans, many with an understanding of the aging process, seemed to offer something to Williams that was never needed for one of the greatest champions in all sports: compassion.”
