The American wins the battle with the winner of Roland Garros, and will play for the title against his compatriot. Flavio loses the semifinal paired with Shelton. At the Queen’s final Paul-Cerundolo
Nothing to do for Flavio Cobolli in the doubles semifinal of the ATP 500 in Halle. The Roland Garros finalist paired with Ben Shelton lost a truly incredible match against the duo of Altmaier and Fonseca, at the end of the supertiebreak of the third set, wasting a match point at 9-8. Final score 7-6 (6) 6-7 (14) 11-9. The second tie break was beautiful, lasting thirty points, where the Brazilian and the German saw four match points canceled out, before being forced into the super tiebreak of the third. Good performance for Cobolli, ready to defend the quarter-finals won in 2025 at Wimbledon.
all-American final
—
In singles on German grass it will be an all-American final. Taylor Fritz against Frances Tiafoe, two who undoubtedly know how to play on grass and who wait every year for this season to achieve excellent results. Fritz in particular, given that of the ten tournaments he won in his career, five were won on green. The Californian beat the fresh Roland Garros winner Alexander Zverev in the semi-final, while his compatriot overcame Daniel Altmaier. Fritz, number 9 in the ranking and fifth seed, beat Sasha with a score of 6-7(4) 6-4 7-5, after 2 hours and 39 minutes.
Taylor’s domain
—
For the American it is the seventh consecutive victory against the number three in the world, gained the day after another marathon (2 hours and 45 minutes) and the comeback against Ben Shelton, against whom he had also canceled match points. In head-to-head matches the German led 5-3 until last summer, but since the Wimbledon match that year, Fritz has never lost to him again. It is the third success on grass and the second in Germany, after the final won in Stuttgart twelve months ago. He will thus play the 22nd final of his career, the seventh on grass and the second in a row after Stuttgart, lost last week against Shelton. Since 2015, both Stuttgart and Halle have been played on grass, only Roger Federer had managed to reach both finals in the same season (2018). The match between Fritz and Zverev was a good match, conditioned by a small back injury to Sasha, which however did not prevent him from fighting until the end. The American on grass is perhaps a tad more competitive than the German, who has never won a tournament on green, however playing two finals (lost) in Halle. Both, however, are candidates for a leading role at Wimbledon, behind the very favorite Jannik Sinner.
tiafoe in the final
—
In the second semi-final, Tiafoe (n. 26) eliminated Altmaier (n. 81) 6-1 6-3, without ever losing serve and making four breaks. For Tiafoe it will be the twelfth final of his career, the fourth in an ATP 500 and the second of 2024 in the category, after the one he lost in Acapulco against Flavio Cobolli. The balance of the direct comparisons between the two finalists sees Fritz ahead 7-1 at ATP level: Tiafoe has not beaten the Californian since Indian Wells 2016, their first challenge among the pros.
Paul-Cerundolo at Queen’s
—
The Argentine Francisco Cerundolo and the American Tommy Paul will compete in the final of the ATP 500 at Queen’s in London. In the semi-finals, Cerundolo came from behind to beat the American Brandon Nakashima 6-7(5) 6-3 6-4, while Paul beat the Frenchman Ugo Humbert 6-3 6-3.
