Ten centimeters too small: Ajax’s goal before Champions League match raised

Arsenal coach Jonas Eidevall found out just before kick-off that the goal was not the right size. “We are at a big club like Ajax and then have to measure the goals before the game. It turned out that they were ten centimeters too small. I have honestly never experienced anything like this. It was very strange,” said the Arsenal coach.

Maintenance

The field at De Toekomst is not only used by the Ajax Women, but also by Young Ajax and youth teams of the Amsterdam club. However, they did not have to deal with the too small goals on the field. “There is daily maintenance on the fields and prior to this game something went wrong when putting the goals back on the main field,” Ajax said in a statement.

The club does not want to comment further on what went wrong when putting the goals back on De Toekomst. “After finding out by Arsenal and UEFA, this has been rectified before kick-off. We obviously regret this and will adjust the procedure to prevent incidents like this in the future.”

However, the game at De Toekomst could start without delay. Arsenal was 0-1 too strong in Amsterdam thanks to a goal from Vivianne Miedema. As a result, the English qualified for the group stage of the Champions League at the expense of Ajax Women.
