Temporary extra camera surveillance in Asser neighborhood Pittelo, residents feel safer

To make residents in the Asser neighborhood of Pittelo feel safer, the municipality has decided to temporarily install two cameras. Assen has been ravaged by car fires for a long time, last year it was hit dozens of times. It was also hit in the Pittelo district and in particular in the vicinity of the Amstelstraat.

Two cameras were installed in the parking lot of the Amstelflat on Amstelstraat just before New Year’s Eve. The municipality has done this because the area ‘also has a history of illegal bonfires around the turn of the year’, she says.

The residents of the Amstel flat are happy with the arrival of the temporary cameras. “They should have arrived earlier, that would have saved a lot of cars. A lot of things happen here. I am still happy every morning that my car is there,” says a resident. “So I think they can come there permanently. It gives a safer feeling.”

Several residents of the Amstel flat say they think the same.

Mayor Marco Out hopes that the sense of security of the residents will recover. “Ultimately, of course, the goal is that there will be no more car fires in this area. The camera surveillance mainly has a preventive effect. But the images can also help in the detection of perpetrators.”

Extra measures have already been taken, writes Out. “There are various options available to the police, such as extra surveillance and gathering information through, for example, the community police officer and community work. These regular measures have not yet led to a solution. That is why it has been decided to (temporarily) install extra camera surveillance. to make.”

There are two cameras in the parking lot of the Amstelflat, while there are fires in the entire neighborhood. But installing camera surveillance is not that easy. “For camera surveillance, you may only apply it in a predetermined area and you must also make this known,” the mayor said. “In this case, in consultation with the police and the judiciary, the car park at the Amstelflat was chosen. The estimate is that we can achieve the goal we have in mind.”

The temporary cameras will be there until 28 January.
