Since yesterday afternoon, the traffic situation has changed slightly on Dam Square in the center of Amsterdam. Motorists must use the tram track, cyclists the footpath and pedestrians walk next to it. The temporary solution is indicated on signs and traffic controllers have been activated. However, the change does not appeal to every road user. “Is this a cycle path?” asks a tourist standing in the middle of the cycle path. “I had no idea!”
‘People don’t listen’
“It’s a bit strange, you can no longer follow what is now the cycle path or the footpath,” concludes a man who stopped on the ‘temporary cycle path’. A traffic controller: “I can keep shouting, but that won’t help. People won’t listen anyway.”
The work on the Dam will continue until mid-April 2026.
