Telstar takes lessons after PSV: “Keep the ball in the team as much as possible”

Telstar does not have very long to dwell on the narrow cup defeat against PSV. Andries Jonker’s team will play against Young Ajax tomorrow afternoon. “The sober observation is that it is of no use to you, the softer observation is that we have made huge advertising for the Telstar club,” says trainer Andries Jonker.

Earlier this season, the first leg went lost big (3-0). Jonker expects the promises to play like Ajax. “Very offensive with skilled, light-footed and young players. That is Ajax, it is mainly about what we do. We want to do better than last time.”

Last Thursday, Telstar again performed well against a title candidate from the Eredivisie. “Two years ago this already happened against Ajax (3-4 defeat ed.). Now we lost 2-1 against PSV in Eindhoven. You cannot advertise your club better in the sense in which we play football. Even better is if you link a good result to that, but that may be too much to ask at the moment.”

Lessons after PSV

The Amsterdam trainer has also learned a number of lessons from the defeat in Eindhoven. “On paper, those kinds of teams are more skilled and better than us when they have the ball. So we have to keep the ball in the team as much as possible. We did that excellently against PSV, especially in the first hour. Keep possession of the ball where possible and play the ball to each other, because if you have the ball, the opposing team can’t hurt you.”

According to Jonker, that is the same with Young Ajax. “Their quality lies in possession of the ball and certainly not when the opposing team has the ball. We brought that from Eindhoven. I also said that to the boys; if you can keep up with this against PSV, you should also be able to do it against Jong Ajax.”

Important role of Smith

Tomorrow will be a reunion for Giovanni with his teammates from Ajax. He was hired earlier this week until the end of this season. “Arvid Smit (former player and former assistant Jonker) has played in Portugal and is fluent in Portuguese. That’s why I let him talk to ‘Gio’ and that provided a lot of useful information. It is a lot easier for that boy to To tell a story in his own language, I’m glad Arvid wanted to help.”

The fitness of the selection is still a concern. “We are missing nine and tomorrow there will be ten,” says Jonker. “You are dealing with the after-effects of corona. All kinds of boys had to play again too early and therefore ran into other injuries. Then the following players had to start too early again. You then get into a spiral, which means that half the team is not fit. enough is.”

According to Jonker, it’s about the guys who are there and tomorrow another team will play that goes for the win. Tom Overtoom and Randy Wolters did not participate in the cup match against PSV and will not participate tomorrow.
