Telstar goes for cup stunt against PSV: “Chance to write history”

Telstar will play tomorrow in the eighth finals of the KNVB Cup against the leader of the Eredivisie: PSV. In Eindhoven, Andries Jonker’s team is going for a stunt. “There are only a few moments in your career where you can make history, and this is one of those moments.”

“The cup is indeed the shortest way to Europe for Telstar,” Jonker admits jokingly. “Of course PSV’s selection is much better on paper than ours. In sport you always have a chance. Two years ago we made it very difficult for Ajax here in the final phase. Nobody expected that. That’s where you have to be now go ahead again”

“For some guys, even without an audience, the ambiance is unique. I’ll take that into account”

Telstar Trainer Andries Jonker

An opponent like PSV will be a unique experience for many Telstar players. “My players are extremely driven to be here. Even more than usual,” Jonker says about the mentality within the selection. “For some boys, even without an audience, the ambiance is unique. They have never seen or experienced anything like this. I’ll take that into account.”

Telstar’s infirmary has become quite full in recent weeks. Jonker will therefore not be able to call on the injured Yaël Liesdek, Anthony Berenstein, Redouan Taha, Niels van Wetten, Anwar Bensabouh and Marouan El Ouardani tomorrow, among others.

If we don’t believe in a stunt, we might as well not go there.”

No more nerves

Telstar captain Glynor Plet is looking forward to the meeting in Eindhoven, but the routine is anything but nervous. “It’s been a long time since I was nervous before a match,” says 36-year-old Plet. “Of course it’s a nice pot. If we don’t believe in a stunt, we might as well not go there.”
