A teenager was injured in the bombing. She cut herself on shards of glass, police say. Presumably from the windows that were shattered by the explosion.
The loud bang was heard in the area. This is evident from the constant influx of local residents who come to take stock. To see where that bang came from.
“There are explosions around here often,” says a man who lives on the other side of the adjacent Plein 40-45, “but I have never heard anything like this one. My wife thought it was thunder. Because of the loud noise I thought: this can’t be thunder. I was worried about the people who live above.”
One of those residents was injured. The rest were unharmed, but were very shocked. “I was in shock,” said Laiju, who lives two floors above the vending machine. She was sleeping like the other residents when it happened. “I couldn’t move for five minutes.”
Her five-year-old son was also terrified, says Laiju. “He was so scared that he didn’t dare go to school. But I had to, that’s better for him. Then he can forget everything that happened.”
The residents are also left with major damage. At Laiju most of the windows are broken. At her downstairs neighbor Yusuf they are almost completely gone. Yusuf is therefore busy all morning sweeping up the shards on his balcony.
